1) PanelPreparationandInstallation
a. Removecoverandsetaside.
b. Reviewmountingsiteanddeterminethebestpositionformountingtheemp.2panel.
c. Thepanelshouldbemountedasclosetothecircuitwiringbeingmonitoredaspossible.
d. Thepanelistobemountedhighenoughsothattheconduitentrance(Figure1A)isviathebottom
ONLY.
e. Accessshallbeviatwo(2)orless,1inch(2.54cm)conduits(Figure1A).
f. DonotremovetheinteriorelectronicsandPCB.
g. Conduitstoenterviathebottom of the cabinetsonlyandbelocatednolessthan1.5inches
(3.81cm),centerlinefromthebackofthecabinet.Useapieceofcardboardorwoodtoprotect
theinternalelectronicswhendrillingintothepanelfortheconduitentry.
h. Preferredmethodissealtightflexibleconduitandappropriateconnectorsandsupports.
i. Fourmountingbrackets(Figure1B)arelocatedonthebacksideofthecabinetandaretobeused
formounting.DONOTDRILLbackofthecabinet.
2) InteriorWiringfortheMonitoringandControl
Panel

a. Theemp.2isdesignedforresidentialenergymonitoring.
b. Thepowersourcefortheemp.2is240volts’singlephase
and is accessed by the host power panel being
monitored.
c. Thecircuitshallbea15amptwopolecircuitbreakerand
terminatedontheterminalblock(Figure1CandFigure
3H) at the lower left hand corner of the monitoring
controlpanellabeled“L1–N–L2“.

d. CT1and2terminals(Figure1D)aresetasidefortotalpanelkWmonitoring.TheCTitselfwillbe
attachedtotheincomingL1andL2inthepowerpanel.“L1”terminatedonCTterminal#1(CT1‐
L1).“L2”terminatedonCTterminal#2(CT2‐L2).Careshouldbetakenwhensettingthesetwo
CTstopreservepolarity.ThearrowontheCTsidelabelshouldpointinthedirectionofthepanel
andcircuitbreakers.
e. CT3and4terminals(Figure1E)arepre‐designatedfor“Solar”monitoringifPVcellshavebeen
installed.Incomingpowerfromthesolarinverterwillbemonitoredatthesolarcircuitbreaker
ordisconnect.“L1”terminatedonCTterminal#3(CT3‐L1).“L2”terminatedonCTterminal#4
(CT4‐L2).
f. CT’s5thru8terminals(Figure3I)areformiscellaneousloadswithintheresidence,i.e.A/Cunits,
electricwaterheater,swimmingpoolpump,electricrange,oven,etc.Theseappliancesare
typically240volts,butlarge120voltloadsmayalsobemonitored.
g. AllappliancesmonitoredonCT5thruCT8willbemonitoredutilizing“L1”phaseonly,theload
phase“L2”willnothaveaCT.
h. ItisessentialthatCTleadscanbe“tracked”fromtheemppaneltothecircuitpanelfortrouble
shooting.Therefore,allCTleadsshouldbelabeled(Figure1F)withtheappropriateCTnumber
everytwofeetandcareshouldbetakentolandeachCTleadatthecorrectterminalblock.
i. The CT has two wires, one black and one white (Figure 3J). The black wire will always be
terminatedontheleft‐handsideoftheterminalblockandthewhitewirewillbeterminatedon
theright‐handsideoftheterminalblock.
j. ChecktomakesurethatthelockingsnapontheCTistightlyclosedaftertheCTissetonthewire
beingmonitored.Pliersmayhavetobeusedtocompressthe
CTtosnapthelockshut.
D.I.P.SwitchSettings
k. TheD.I.P.switchsettings(Figure2G)mustbesettomatchthe
loadbeingmonitored.
i. Topsetting:UsethissettingwhentheCTislandedon“L1”
ofa240voltcircuit
ii. Second/middle setting: Use this setting when the CT is
landedon“L1”ofa120voltcircuit
iii. Third/bottom setting: Use this setting when the CT is
landedon“L2”ofa120voltcircuit

RelayWiringand“Jumper”Setting
m. Therearetworelays(Relay#1and#2,Figure3K)atthebottomrightofthecontrolcabinet.Relay
#1ontherightandrelay#2ontheleft.Thepurposeoftheserelaysistoturnonoroffanynon‐
criticalloadbeingmonitored,suchasapoolpumpthatcanbede‐energizedforshortperiodsin
ordertominimizedemandchargesfromtheutility.
n. The relays can be controlled by one of two TARAS
modules(Figure3K)andthe“Jumper” setting(J25
andJ26justbelowTARASModule8)determine
whichTARAScardwillcontroltherelay.Relay“R1”
can be controlled by TARAS module 5 or 6. Relay
“R2”iscontrolledbyTARASmodule7or8.Typically,
the factory setting for the jumpers will be 5 (for
Relay1)and7(forRelay2).
o. ItisessentialthattheJumperissetsuchthattheCT
for that TARAS Module is monitoring the same
circuitthatisroutedthroughtherelay.Forexample,
iftheJumperforRelay1issetto6thenCT‐6should
beonthesameloadthatiswiredthroughRelay1.
p. Wiringviatherelaysrequiresonelegoftheloadto
bewiredfromthecircuitbreakerthroughtherelay
terminals (not shown, but plug directly into the
relay)andbacktotheloadbeingcontrolled.Extend
thecircuitwiringusingappropriatelyrated wireas
necessary. Terminal connectors will have to be
crimpedontothewiringtoconnecttotheterminals
ontherelays.The“outside”terminalontherelay
should be used and the “middle” terminal is left
blank.
