3 General Information

3.1 FAP-440 Fire Detectors

The FAP-440 Series open-area fire detectors work with an FPA-1000-UL Fire Panel, software

version 2.0, or an FPA-1000-V2, software version 2.0 or higher. Use with the FAA-440 Series

bases to provide general property protection.

For commercial and industrial installations, the following spacing between detectors is

permitted:

– FAH-440: 50 ft. (15.24 m)

– FAP-440(-D)/FAP-440-(D)T/FAP-440-(D)TC: 30 ft. (9.14 m)

3.2 FAA-440 Isolator Bases

The FAA-440 isolator bases prevent the entire SLC loop from being disabled when a short

circuit occurs. This is accomplished by isolating that part of the loop containing the short

from the remainder of the circuit. As soon as the short circuit is removed, the entire loop is

restored. There is no need to reset the loop.

In the event of a short circuit, the isolator base LED will show a steady yellow signaling a

trouble condition.

3.3 Panel Communication

The control panel communicates to the detectors via the analog adressable loop (SLC loop).

Standard non-twisted, non-shielded wiring (plain old wire) for the SLCs is recommended.

The following wire gauges were tested and approved:

– 18 AWG (0.8 mm2) -> 4000 ft (1200m)

– 16 AWG (1.3 mm2) -> 6225 ft (1900m)

– 14 AWG (2.1 mm2) -> 7200 ft (2200m)

– 12 AWG (3.3 mm2) -> 9850 ft (3000m)

3.4 Programming

The programming is carried out either at the panel keypad, or through a Web server using a

laptop, or remote, using a Web page (detector address setting see Section 5.2 Addressing

Information, page 13).

The sensitivity of the smoke sensor has 12 levels to choose from.

– 0.90 %/ft (≤ 4000 ft/min), 2.95 %/m (≤ 1220 m/min)

– 1.00 %/ft (≤ 4000 ft/min), 3.30 %/m (≤ 1220 m/min)

– 1.25 %/ft (≤ 4000 ft/min), 4.10 %/m (≤ 1220 m/min)

– 1.50 %/ft (≤ 4000 ft/min), 4.90 %/m (≤ 1220 m/min)

– 1.75 %/ft (≤ 4000 ft/min), 5.75 %/m (≤ 1220 m/min)

– 2.00 %/ft (≤ 4000 ft/min), 6.55 %/m (≤ 1220 m/min)

– 2.25 %/ft (≤ 4000 ft/min), 7.40 %/m (≤ 1220 m/min)

– 2.50 %/ft (≤ 4000 ft/min), 8.20 %/m (≤ 1220 m/min)

– 2.75 %/ft (≤ 2000 ft/min), 9.00 %/m (≤ 610 m/min)

– 3.00 %/ft (≤ 300 ft/min), 9.85 %/m (≤ 90 m/min)

NOTICE!

Voltag drop calculations along with anticipated wire distance should be considered to ensure

a voltage supply of at least 24 V at every detector.

– 3.25 %/ft (≤ 300 ft/min), 10.65 %/m (≤ 90 m/min)

– 3.50 %/ft (≤ 300 ft/min), 11.50 %/m (≤ 90 m/min)

The default smoke threshold level (STL) is 2.5 %/ft, 8.2 %/m.

The FAH-440 heat detector includes:

1. Maximum alarm threshold range of +135 °F to +194 °F (+57 °C to +90 °C) and 17 possible

settings.

– 135 ºF (~ 57 ºC)

– 137 ºF (~ 58 ºC)

– 180 ºF (~ 82 ºC)

– 185 ºF (= 85 ºC)

– 190 ºF (~ 88 °C)

– 194 ºF (= 90 °C)

The default temperature threshold level (TTL) is 135 ºF (~ 57 ºC).

2. In addition, rate-of-rise feature (RoR) can be programmed on or off

3.5 Flash Rates and Trouble Indication

The detector head has a multi-color LED to indicate operating, trouble and alarm condition.

To verify power to the detector and a functioning transmission of the analog adressable loop,

the LED indicator flashes green when operating normally (polling). Throughout its normal life

cycle, the smoke detector monitors and periodically compensates itself to keep the sensitivity

at its factory calibrated level. When the detector is excessively contaminated, this condition

will be annunciated at the control panel and indicated on the detector by the yellow flashing

LED.

In case of an alarm, the LED will change to steady red. The detector is set to normal, if the

alarm condition is reset by the panel and if the smoke and/or heat that caused the alarm has

dissipated.

Through panel parameter setting, it is possible to turn on or off operation of the polling or

trouble indicator. In the event of an alarm condition, the detector LED will always show a

steady red light.

3.6 CO Sensor Service Life

The service life of the CO sensor is limited. The FAP-440-TC detector switches the CO sensor

off after 6 years of operation and indicates a trouble (LED flashing yellow). On the fire panel,

the detector in question is displayed with a corresponding trouble message. It will continue to

function similar to a photo/heat detector FAP-440-T. The detector should then be replaced

immediately in order to maintain the superior false alarm immunity of the photo/heat/CO

detector.

4 Mounting

– Follow NFPA-72 guidelines for mounting locations. For commercial and industrial

installations, 30 ft. (9 m) spacing between smoke detectors is recommended.

– The electrical boxes must be sized to accommodate the number of conductors as

specified by the National Electrical Code or the local Authorities Having Jurisdiction

(AHJ).

NOTICE!

The isolator bases have their own LEDs which will signal a trouble condition in the case of a

short circuit.

NOTICE!

Multisensor detectors with CO sensors must be replaced every 6 years.

NOTICE!

Smoke detectors are not to be used with detector guards unless the combination has been

evaluated and found suitable for that purpose.
