SAFETY WARNING & CAUTIONS

WARNING: When using pneumatic equipment, basic safety precautions should always be fol-

lowed to reduce the risk of personal injury and hazards due to over pressurization. READ ALL

INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USING THIS TOOL!

1. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Cluttered areas invite injuries.

2. OBSERVE WORK AREA CONDITIONS. Do not use tools in damp, wet, or poorly

lit locations. Don’t expose to rain. Keep work area well lit. Do not use electrically

powered air compressors in the presence of ammable gases or liquids.

3. KEEP CHILDREN AWAY. Children must never be allowed in the work area. Do not

let them handle machines, tools, or hoses.

4. STORE IDLE EQUIPMENT. When not in use, tools must be locked up in a dry

location to inhibit rust. Always lock up tools and keep out of reach of children.

5. USE THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB. Do not attempt to force a small tool or

attachment to do the work of a larger industrial tool. Do not use a tool for a purpose

for which it was not intended.

6. DRESS PROPERLY. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry as they can be caught

in moving parts. Nonskid footwear is recommended. Wear restrictive hair covering

to contain long hair.

7. USE EYE AND EAR PROTECTION. Always wear ANSI approved impact safety

goggles when working. Wear an ANSI approved dust mask or respirator when

working around metal, wood, and chemical dusts and mists.

8. DO NOT ABUSE THE COMPRESSOR’S CORD. Do not yank compressor’s cord

to disconnect it from the receptacle. Do not carry tools by the cord.

9. DO NOT OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Do not

reach over or across running machines.

10. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools clean for better and safer perfor-

mance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories. Inspect hoses

for leaks prior to use. The handle must be kept clean, dry, and free from oil and

grease at all times.

11. AVOID UNINTENTIONAL STARTING. Do not carry any tool with your nger on the

trigger, whether it is connected to the compressor or not.

12. STAY ALERT. Watch what you are doing, use common sense. Do not operate any

tool when you are tired.

13. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before using any tool, any part that appears dam-

aged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and

perform its intended function. Check for alignment and binding of moving parts;

any broken parts or mounting xtures; and any other condition that may affect

proper operation. Any part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced

by a qualied technician. Do not use the tool if any switch does not turn on and off

properly.

14. REPLACEMENT PARTS AND ACCESSORIES. When servicing, use only identical

replacement parts. Use of any other parts will void the warranty. Only use accesso-

ries intended for use with this tool. Approved accessories are available from Harbor

Freight Tools.

15. DO NOT OPERATE TOOL IF UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL OR

DRUGS. Read warning labels on prescriptions to determine if your judgment or

reexes are impaired while taking drugs. If there is any doubt, do not operate the

tool.

16. DRAIN COMPRESSOR EVERY DAY. Do not allow moisture to build up inside the

compressor.

17. MAKE SURE ALL EQUIPMENT IS RATED TO THE APPROPRIATE CAPACITY.

Make sure that regulator is set at least 10 PSI lower than the lowest rated piece of

equipment you are using.

18. DO NOT POINT AT PEOPLE OR ANIMALS. Whether the Riveter is loaded or not,

do not point at anything but what you plan on riveting.

19. BE CAREFUL WHEN LOADING RIVETER. Do not point at yourself. Never hold

the Trigger when loading.

20. NEVER OPERATE WITHOUT THE SAFETY CAP IN PLACE.

21. COMPRESSED AIR ONLY. Never use combustible gas as a power source.

22. WARNING: The brass components of this product contain lead, a chemical known

to the State of California to cause birth defects (or other reproductive harm). (Cali-

fornia Health & Safety code § 25249.5, et seq.)

UNPACKING

When unpacking, check to make sure the following parts are included. All sizes

listed below are approximate. If any parts are missing or broken, please call Harbor

Freight Tools at: 1-800-444-3353. There should be one Air Hydraulic Riveter, two combi-

nation wrenches, an extra set of jaws, and a three Nose Pieces threaded into the base

of the riveter. A fourth Nose Piece comes installed in the Riveter.

SET UP

It is advisable to use an in-line oiler. If you are not using an in-line oiler, put a few

drops of pneumatic oil into the Air Inlet (35) prior to every operation.

To Install A Nosepiece:

The Riveter comes with a set of four Nosepieces (1). The sizes of the Nosepieces

are 1/4”, 1/8”, 5/32”, and 3/16” and must be matched with the size of the rivet pin

(1/4”, 1/8”, 5/32”, or 3/16”) you intend to use. (See Figure B.)

2. Use the accessory Spanner when changing Nosepieces (1). Also, use care when

unscrewing a Nosepiece as the spring action in the Outer Cylinder (2) will cause

the Nosepiece to “pop out”. (See Figure B.)

Note: Nosepieces are stored underneath the Base Cover (34).

OPERATION

1. Depending on the size of rivet pin used, attach the corresponding Nosepiece size

(1/4”, 1/8”, 5/32”, or 3/16”) with the accessory Spanner Wrench (36).

2. IMPORTANT: When drilling rivet holes in a workpiece, make sure to use the same

diameter drill bit as the outer diameter of rivet sleeve you will be using.

3. Turn on the air compressor, and set its regulator between 90-120 PSI.

Do not exceed 120 PSI.

4. Insert the pin (long, thin end) of a rivet fully into the Nosepiece (1). Insert the

sleeve (short, thick end) of the rivet through the pre-drilled hole in the workpiece.

Do not touch the Trigger (25) when you are inserting rivets.

5. Hold the Riveter rmly with both hands, and squeeze the Trigger (25) to activate

the Riveter. Repeat as necessary. Then, release pressure on the Trigger. See

Figure B.

6. When nished using the Riveter, turn off the air compressor. Squeeze the Trigger

(25) again to release any compressed air in the Riveter. Then, disconnect the air

hose from the tool.

INSPECTION, MAINTENANCE, AND CLEANING

WARNING! Always wear ANSI-approved safety impact goggles when per-

forming any inspection, maintenance, or cleaning procedures.

WARNING! Prior to performing any inspection, maintenance, or cleaning of the Riveter,

make sure to disconnect the air hose from the tool. Then, squeeze the Trigger (25)

again to release any compressed air in the Riveter.

1. To clean the exterior of the Riveter, wipe with a clean, damp cloth using a mild

detergent or mild solvent. Do not immerse the tool in liquids.

2. To clean and change the Jaws:

a. Unscrew and remove the Outer Cylinder (2), using the accessory Spanner.

b. Use the Spanner to unscrew and remove the Jaw Cylinder (7). Use care as there

is a Jaw Pusher Spring (6) behind the Jaw Cylinder (7) which may y out.

c. Remove the Jaws (4) from between the Jaw Cylinder (7).

d. If you are going to clean the Jaws (4), use a steel brush and mild solvent. Apply a

light coat of machine oil to the Jaws (4).

If you are going to replace the Jaws: Insert the new Jaws (4) into the Jaw Cylinder

(7). (See Figure C.)

f. When re-assembling the Jaw Cylinder (7), make sure the Jaw Pusher’s (5) head

lines up with the Jaws. (See Figure C.)

g. Check the distance from the head of the Jaw Cylinder (7) to the mounting threads

of the Outer Cylinder (2) using the gauge on the 3-Way Spanner Wrench. With

the gauge at a slight incline, the back of the gauge should rest on the beginning

of the Frame Head threads, while the front of the gauge should rest on the front

edge of the Jaw Carrier (3). If it does not, have a qualied service technician re-

pair the Riveter. (See Figure C.)

To Prime The Riveter:

Note: If the riveter’s performance declines, it may be due to insufcient hydraulic oil.

Rell the hydraulic oil using the procedure below.

WARNING! Make sure the Riveter is disconnected from its air supply hose prior to

performing any maintenance, service, or changing accessories.

Remove the Base Cover (34) and unscrew the Air Cylinder Lid (24) from the

bottom of the Riveter. See Figure D.

2. Use a pair of pliers (not included) to remove the Piston Head (22) from the Air

Cylinder (19). See Figure D.

3. Hold the Air Cylinder (19) upside down, and pour in hydraulic oil (not included).

The ll level should only reach the top of the Frame.

4. Insert the Piston Assembly back into the Air Cylinder (19). See Figure D.

5. Use the Spanner to rmly screw the Air Cylinder Lid (24) back onto the Air Cylinder

(19). See Figure D.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Problem Possible Cause Likely Solution

Jaws slipping. Worn or damaged Jaws. Replace Jaws.

Jaws will not open. 1. Loose Nosepiece.

technician/upgrade to compressor of sufcient

capability.

Leaking air. 1. Poor hose connections.

2. Damaged O-Ring.

3. Dirty Air Valve or airline

1. Reconnect using pipe thread seal tape.

2. Replace O-Ring.

3. Clean and lubricate with pneumatic tool oil.
