RX100 S4 Operating manual 7

1Introduction

The PRIMERGY RX100 S4 server is an Intel-based server for small and

medium-sized networks and can be used in the rack systems made by Fujitsu

Siemens Computers GmbH and in current standard rack systems made by

various other manufacturers.

Thanks to its highly developed hardware and software components, the

PRIMERGY RX100 S4 server offers a high level of data security and availability.

These include the ServerView server management software, Prefailure

Detection and Analysing (PDA) and Automatic Server Reconfiguration and

Restart (ASR&R).

Security functions in the BIOS Setup and on the system board protect the data

on the server against manipulation. Additional security is provided by the

lockable rack door.

The server occupies 1 height unit in the rack.

1.1 Documentation overview

IPRIMERGY manuals are available in PDF format on the ServerBooks

DVD, which is part of the ServerView Suite provided with each server

system.

These PDF files can also be downloaded from the Internet free of

charge: At http://manuals.fujitsu-siemens.com you will find an overview

page showing the online documentation available on the Internet. You

can go to the PRIMERGY Server documentation by clicking on industry

standard servers.

Concept and target groups for this manual

This operating manual describes how to install, set up and operate your server.

This manual is intended for those people responsible for installing the hardware

and ensuring that the system runs smoothly. The manual contains all the infor-

mation required to install and operate your PRIMERGY RX100 S4.

A knowledge of hardware and data transmission, as well as basic knowledge of

the operating system used, is necessary to fully understand the various

expansion options. You should also have a good working knowledge of the

English language.

1.2 Features

System board

The features of the system board are described in the technical manual for the

system board D2532 for the hardware and in the “BIOS Setup” for the firmware

(see “Literature” on page 77).

Hard disk drives

Two basic versions of the server are available, fitted with either SATA or SAS

hard disk drives.

SAS server version:

The server has a drive cage in which one or two SAS hard disk drive modules

can be inserted. Each hard disk drive (HDD) module can accept an SAS hard

disk drive with a maximum height of 1 inch. The module is connected to the SAS

backplane without cables via the SAS interface. This allows hard disk drive

modules to be easily plugged in or removed. If the server has a corresponding

RAID configuration, defective HDD modules can also be replaced during

operation.

SATA server version:

With the standard design, the server has a drive cage in which up to two SATA

hard disk drives with an "easy change" drive frame and a maximum height of

1 inch are fitted. There is a wire connection to the controller. Defective HDD

modules cannot be replaced during operation.

Features Introduction

The server can optionally be upgraded with a SATA backplane. The SATA hard

disk drive modules then have a wireless connection via the SATA interface. This

allows hard disk drive modules to be easily plugged in or removed. If the server

has a corresponding RAID configuration, defective HDD modules can also be

replaced during operation.

Onboard SAS controller with Integrated Mirroring Enhanced functionality

An 8-channel SAS controller with "Integrated Mirroring Enhanced" (IME)

functionality is fitted to operate the two hard drives. IME also provides RAID

functionality for configuring the internal hard drives (RAID level 0, 1, 1E).

IA separate utility is available to the controller for IME configuration.

Further information can be found in the "Integrated RAID for SAS User’s

Guide" (on the ServerBooks DVD under "Controllers").

Onboard SATA controller

A 2-channel SATA controller is fitted to operate the two hard drives. LSI SATA

Software RAID supports RAID level 0 and 1.

IThe controller has its own configuration utility. Further information can be

found in the "Embedded SATA Software RAID for ICH7R User’s Guide"

(on the ServerBooks DVD under "Controllers").

Accessible drives

An installation slot is provided for a slimline CD/DVD drive (optional). The

accessible drive installed here cannot be replaced during operation.

Power supply

The server has a built-in power supply unit, which automatically sets itself to a

mains voltage in the range 100 V - 127 V or 200 V - 240 V.
