Introduction

ThisguideprovidesinstructionsonhowtoinstallanoperatingsystemontheLenovo®ThinkServer®TS430

server.

Itisrecommendedthatyouusetheself-starting(bootable)ThinkServerEasyStartupDVDthatcomeswith

yourservertoinstallanoperatingsystem.TheDVDcontainstheThinkServerEasyStartupprogram.The

ThinkServerEasyStartupprogramsimpliestheprocessofconguringRedundantArrayofIndependent

Disks(RAID)andinstallingsupportedMicrosoft®Windows®andLinux®operatingsystemsanddevice

driversonyourserver.TheuserguidefortheThinkServerEasyStartupprogramalsoisontheDVDandcan

beaccesseddirectlyfromtheprograminterface.However,ifyouwanttoinstallanoperatingsystemonyour

serverwithoutusingtheThinkServerEasyStartupDVD,refertotheinformationinthisguide.

Beforeinstallinganoperatingsystem

Ensurethatyouhavepreparedthefollowingitemsbeforeinstallinganoperatingsystem:

•Prepareanoperatingsysteminstallationdiscwithlicense.

•PrinttherelatedinstructionsinthisguideorensurethatyoucanviewthePDFversiononanothercomputer.

•Ensurethatyourserverhassupportedharddiskdrivesinstalled.

•CongureRAIDforyourserverifyouwanttouseRAID.ForinformationaboutconguringRAID,referto

theUserGuideonthedocumentationDVDthatcomeswithyourserver.Youalwayscanobtainallthe

•PrepareaUniversalSerialBus(USB)storagedevicethatcontainstherequireddevicedriversfor

yourservermodel.Todownloaddevicedrivers,gotohttp://www.lenovo.com/driversandfollowthe

•Settheopticaldrivethatyouwanttouseastherststartupdevice.

Notes:

•ForonboardSATAsoftwareRAID,itisnotsupportedtoinstallanoperatingsysteminUniedExtensible

FirmwareInterface(UEFI)mode.DonotstarttheserverfromtheDVD-ROMdevicelistedin“UEFI:

DVD-ROMname”intheBootOptionsmenutoinstallanoperatingsystem.

•Itisnotsupportedtoinstallanoperatingsystemonapartitiongreaterthan2.2TB.

1.ConnectthepreparedUSBstoragedevicetotheserver.TheUSBstoragedeviceshouldcontain

requireddevicedriversforyourservermodelandoperatingsystem.

2.Inserttheoperatingsysteminstallationdiscintotheopticaldrivethatyouhavesetastherststartup

device.Then,starttheserverfromtheopticaldrive.

3.Pressanykeyonthekeyboardassoonasthemessage“PressanykeytobootfromCD”isdisplayed.

TheWindowssetupinitializationbegins.

Note:IfyourservercongurationisonboardSATAwithoutRAID,gotostep8.

4.PressF6assoonasthemessage“PressF6ifyouneed...driver”isdisplayedatthebottomofthe

screen.

5.Whenthemessage“Setupcouldnotdeterminethe...devices”isdisplayed,pressSandfollowthe

instructionsonthescreentoinstalldevicedrivers.

6.Whenthemessage“Youhavechosen...”isdisplayed,selectLSIEmbeddedMegaRAID(Windows

2003...)andpressEnter.

7.Whenthemessage“Setupwillloadsupportforthefollowingmassstoragedevices”isdisplayed,

pressEnter.

8.Whenthewelcomewindowisdisplayed,pressEnter.Then,theWindowsLicenseAgreementis

displayed.

9.PressF8toaccepttheWindowsLicenseAgreementandcontinuewiththeinstallation.

10.Whenallharddiskdrivesavailableontheserveraredisplayed,selectadrivepartitiononwhichyou

wanttoinstalltheoperatingsystemandthenpressEnter.

11.Followtheinstructionsonthescreentomakeselectionsuntiltheinstallationprocessbegins.Then,the

drivepartition,whichyouhaveselected,willbeformattedandtheapplicableleswillbecopiedfrom

theoperatingsysteminstallationdisctothedrivepartition.Whentheprocessnishes,theserverwill

restartautomatically.

12.Aftertheserverrestarts,followtheinstructionsonthescreentosettheregionalandlanguageoptions,

enteryournameandlicensekey,anddoothercongurationstocompletetheinstallation.

13.Installotherrequireddevicedrivers.Todownloaddevicedrivers,gotohttp://www.lenovo.com/drivers

andfollowtheinstructionsontheWebpage.

6.WhentheMicrosoftlicensetermsaredisplayed,selectIacceptthelicensetermsandclickNext.

7.SelectCustom(advanced).

8.Whenallharddiskdrivesavailableontheserveraredisplayed,dooneofthefollowingtoselector

createadrivepartitiononwhichyouwanttoinstalltheoperatingsystem:

Note:Amessage“Nodriverswerefound”mightbedisplayed,indicatingthatyourserverdoesnothave

amassstoragedevicedriverinstalled.Toinstallamassstoragedevicedriver,connectaUSBstorage

devicethatcontainstherequiredRAIDcontrollerdriverandclickLoadDriver.

•Ifyouwanttousetheentireharddiskdriveasoneprimarypartition,selectDisk0Unallocated

SpacefortheharddiskdriveonwhichyouwanttoinstalltheoperatingsystemandthenclickNext.

Afterthesetupprocessnishes,adrivepartitionwillbeautomaticallycreated.

•Ifyouwanttomanuallycreateanewdrivepartition,dothefollowing:

a.SelectDisk0UnallocatedSpacefortheharddiskdriveonwhichyouwanttoinstalltheoperating

system.Then,clickDriveoptions(advanced).

b.ClickNew.

c.Typetheamountofspace(inMB)forthedrivepartitionandclickApply.

Notes:

–Ifamessageisdisplayed,indicatingthattheWindowsoperatingsystemcannotbeinstalledon

thedrivepartitionyouselectedorcreated,clickthemessagetoviewtheminimumfreespace

thatisrequiredforthedrivepartition.Ensurethatthedrivepartitionyouselectedorcreated

meetstherequirement.

–AdditionalpartitionsforsystemleswillbecreatedautomaticallytoensurethatallWindows

featuresworkcorrectly.

d.ClickNext.Theinstallationprocessbegins.

9.Whentheinstallationprocessnishes,theserverwillrestartautomatically.Changeyourpasswordwhen

promptedbeforeyoulogontotheserverforthersttime.

Note:Thepasswordshouldhaveatleasteightcharactersinlengthandbeacombinationofupper

caseletters,lowercaseletters,andnumbers.

10.Continuewiththeinitialsetuptasksbyfollowingtheinstructionsonthescreen.
