Operation
When the meter is turned on, it performs a self test and all the elements of the LCD appear.
Then the temperature of T1 displays. The meter returns to the temperature scale and
thermocouple type that was selected the last time the meter was used.
Note: If “OL”appears on the display, the thermocouple is not plugged in or working properly.
1. Connect the thermocouple(s) to the meter.
2. Press the button to turn the meter on.
•If the unit does not function as expected, replace the batteries.
•If the unit still does not function as expected, send the unit to Greenlee for repair.
See the address shown under Warranty.
3. To turn the meter off, press the button.
Selecting the Thermocouple Input
The meter defaults to T1 when it is turned on.
1. To view the T2 thermocouple reading, press the T1 T2 T1-T2 button.
“T2”is displayed and its value appears.
2. Press T1 T2 T1-T2 again to see the difference between the two thermocouple
readings. The T1-T2 mode calculates the difference between T1 and T2.
3. To automatically cycle through the three modes, press the button again. The LCD shows
the mode that is being displayed.
4. To print all three values, press the PRINT button.
5. Press T1 T2 T1-T2 again to return to the T1 reading.
Viewing Maximum and Minimum Temperatures
The TM-400 temporarily stores the maximum and minimum temperature readings of the
selected thermocouple. The meter also calculates the average between the last two recorded
readings. These are updated as the values change.
1. Press the T1 T2 T1-T2 button to select the desired thermocouple input.
2. Press the MAX MIN AVG button to record the maximum temperature.
“MAX”and the value appear on the display.
3. Press the MAX MIN AVG button to record the minimum temperature.
“MIN”and the value appear on the display.
4. Press the MAX MIN AVG button again to view the average temperature.
“AVG”and the value appear on the display.
5. Press the MAX MIN AVG button to return to normal operation.

Operation (cont’d)
Using the Printer
Temperature readings can be printed on demand or at regular intervals automatically. The
interval range is from once every 3 seconds to once every 24 hours. Interval printing is
configured through the MENU button.
Installing the Paper
•Do not operate the printer without paper.
•Do not pull paper—use the FEED button.
•Do not pull paper backward through the printer.
•Do not run paper to the end of the roll if it has a core.
1. Gently pry open the paper spool door.
2. Evenly trim the end of the paper.
3. Insert the trimmed end of the paper so
that it feeds from the bottom of the
spool. Refer to the illustration.
4. While inserting the paper, press and
hold the FEED button until the paper
emerges.
If the paper jams, release the FEED
button and pull the paper carefully and
slowly backwards.
5. Place the paper roll in the cartridge.
6. Close the paper spool door.

Operation (cont’d)
Printing the Current Temperature
Press the PRINT button to print at anytime. The icon appears briefly. Time is in the 24-
hour format. The print format is as follows:
Line 1: hour:minute:second month–day
Line 2: thermocouple mode thermocoupletype value temperature units
Setting Up Interval Printing
Interval printing, date, and time are configured through the MENU button. The configuration
remains in memory and can be changed as needed. However, if you enable interval printing
through the MENU button (which limits the function to 24 hours), you will need to enter start
and stop times if they are different than the stored times.
Notes:
Use the or buttons to increase or decrease the flashing digit or to scroll through choices.
Pressing and releasing the buttons increases or decreases the value slowly. Pressing and
holding the buttons increases or decreases the value quickly.
After completing a step, use the button to advance to the next configuration or the button
to return to a previous configuration. The next parameter will flash on the display.
1. Turn the meter on.
2. Press the MENU button. The icon appears and “00”flashes.
3. To enable interval printing, press the button until “01”appears (“01”enables interval
printing; “00”disables interval printing).
4. When the thermocouple type flashes, press the or button to scroll through the
choices.
5. When the temperature unit (°C or °F) flashes, scroll through the choices.
6. When “HI ALARM”and the first digit(s) of the value flash, set the value at which the meter
will generate an alarm. Also set the last digits.
7. When “LO ALARM”and the first digit(s) of the value flash, repeat the previous step to set
the low alarm value.
8. When “TIME INTV”appears, set the frequency that you want to print the reading, in
hours, minutes, and seconds.
9. When “TIME”appears, set the time when interval printing is to start, in hours and
minutes. Time is entered in the 24-hour mode.
