PU203 Sweex two port internal SATA II RAID PCI Express Card

• Do not expose the Sweex two port internal SATA II RAID PCI Express Card to extreme temperatures. Do not place the device in direct sun light or close to

heating elements.

• Do not use the Sweex two port internal SATA II RAID PCI Express Card in extremely dusty or moist environments.

• Prevent hard shocks or impacts of the device, as this can cause damage to the internal electronics.

• Never try to open the device yourself, this voids the warranty.

Prior to installing the hardware, follow these precautionary instructions:

1. Make sure the PC is turned off and that there is no networking current.

2. Disconnect the printer and monitor cable as these have their own power supply, to be sure that the PC is current free.

3. Now unscrew the computer casing.

4. Make sure that you undo yourself of possible static electricity. This can be done by grabbing a (naked) central heating pipe or an unpainted water pipe. Pay

attention not to use a magnetic screwdriver. Briefly touch the iron frame of the PC casing. Touch the contact points and the memory as little as possible.

5. Locate a free PCIe slot and remove the metal protection plate that is in the computer casing for the intended slot. It is possible that the card does not easily

fit in the PCIe slot. When this occurs, do not force it but try a different free slot.

6. When the card is mounted successfully, check if the other cards are still fitted properly in their slots. Replace the removed casing and connect all cables

correctly.

7. Turn the PC back on.

Activating RAID functions

After installing the Sweex two port internal SATA II RAID PCI Express Card in the PC, you have to activate it when you want to use the RAID functions.

After placing the card and the PC has been started, the card indicates that the so called “BIOS “ of the card is accessable. During this screen “CTRL + S” or “F4“

have to be pressed.

Create a RAID set

Select the option “Create RAID set”. A menu appears with the options “Striped” (RAID-0) and “Mirrored” (RAID-1).

RAID-0 (Striped)

Several discs are placed in an array (group of discs) and are used as one big disc. The data is split into small (a few units of kbytes) blocks (also called stripes)

and written onto the multiple discs. Hereby a speed increase is achieved because multiple discs can load or save data at the same time. Theoretically, the speed

increase should be proportional to the amount of discs. In reality most of the time this is not achieved.

RAID-0 does not offer error correction. If one disc malfunctions, all data off the disc array is lost!

The smallest disc (with capacity) in the array determines the size of all RAID-systems. If for example a 50GB-, 100GB- and a 250GB-disc are put in a RAID-0

array, the controller will offer a disc of 150GB (50GB x 3) to the pc.

RAID-1 (Mirrored)

RAID-1 saves the data two (or more) times on different discs. If one disc malfunctions the computer system will not be hindered and will just stay operational.

The controller will then run all data over the other disc (or discs). The controller will of course hint the user that something is wrong - but the system will keep

running. For the pc, the logical disc is as big as the smallest disc in the set.

If 1 on 1 mirroring is applied with 2 160GB discs, the system will only see 1 disc with a capacity of 160GB.

Here the smallest disc also defines the final storage capacity of the entire RAID-system.

Next choose the RAID Array. In the next menu choose “Auto Configuration”. Confirm the choice by pressing “Y” (Yes).

The RAID-0 or RAID-1 array is now created.

Removing a RAID set

To remove a made RAID set, select the option “Delete RAID set”. Confirm the choice by pressing “Y” (Yes).

Installation Windows 2000 and XP

After detection of the hardware, Windows shows the following screen:

Choose for the option “No, not this time” and Press “Next”.

In the next screen choose “Install from a list or specific location” and press “Next”.

Check the second option: “include this location”. Place the Sweex CD-ROM in the player. Thereafter go to the Sweex CD-ROM via “Browse” and select the

“Drivers” folder. In this folder choose the correct operating system; XP or WINDOWS 2000. Press “Next”.

Pay attention: In the picture the X is the letter of our CD-ROM station. This letter can be different!

The hardware is now installed successfully. To complete press “Finish”.

Installation Windows Vista

The drivers on the Sweex CD-ROM are located in the “Drivers” folder.

After detection of the hardware Windows shows the following screen: Here choose to locate and install the drivers.

Place the Sweex CD-ROM in the computer. If it was inserted already, open the CD-ROM tray and then close it.

Windows will automatically search and install the driver.

For all Sweex products a warranty period of 3 years applies. We do not give support or warranty on supplied software, rechargeable batteries and batteries.

Transaction of warranty only takes place at the sales point where the product is bought.
