Engine Timing Tool Set BMW N40 / N45

GENERAL INFORMATION

This engine timing kit contains the tools required for engine timing control and setting in the case of

timing chain replacement, cylinder head repair, cylinder head gasket replacement, etc. and is suitable

for the indicated BMW cars / engines with timing chain.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

xDo not use the tools with any of the parts missing of damaged.

xNever place tools on the car battery. Risk of electrical short.

xBe careful while working on running engines. Loose clothing, tools and other objects may get

caught in revolving parts and cause severe personal injuries.

xKeep away children and other unauthorized persons from the working area.

xBe careful while working on hot engines – risk of burns!

xRemove the ignition key before starting your repair work in order to avoid unintentional starting of

the engine and the consequential engine damage.

xThese instructions are intended as an overview and can by no means substitute a workshop

manual.

xAlways use car-specific service manuals to look up technical data such as torque values,

disassembly/assembly instructions, etc.

xAfter repair or before starting the engine, respectively, rotate the engine twice by hand and

recheck engine timing.

xDo not use any detergents to clean timing belt, sprockets or pulleys

xOnly rotate the engine in its normal direction of rotation (clockwise unless stated otherwise)

APPLICATION

Crankshaft setting pin

for setting the crankshaft to TDC position.

The bore hole dedicated to this purpose is located on the

inlet side below the starter.

Inlet camshaft setting tool

for setting the inlet camshaft

The correct setting has been reached, when the tool is

poised max. 0.5 mm above or resting on the cylinder

head without leaving a gap

Outlet camshaft setting tool with connecting bolt

for positioning the outlet camshaft

The correct setting has been reached, when the tool is

resting on the cylinder head without leaving a gap.

Timing chain pretensioning tool

for timing chain pretensioning after assembly.

Caution: please observe the manufacturer‘s torque

value. Pretensioning with a torque wrench is imperative.

Rotary sensor fixing tool

to fix the rotary sensors while tightening the rotary

sensor bolts.

Caution: the tool has to be screwed to the cylinder head

applying a torque of approx. 5 Nm before tightening the

rotary sensor bolts
