Terminology and

Abbreviations

All values in this document are typical values under the following conditions

unless otherwise noted: 230V AC 50 Hz input voltage, 12V 5 A output load, 25 °C

(77 °F) ambient temperature, and after a 5 minutes run-in time.

Product Overview

The unit is designed as a Class of Protection II unit, and fulfills the safety and

electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements without an input PE

connection. This saves wiring costs.

The 1606-XLB60BH is part of a series of compact, industrial grade DIN rail

power supplies that focuses on the essential features that are needed in

present day industrial applications. The excellent cost/performance ratio does

not compromise quality or reliability.

Terms Descriptions

PE The abbreviation for Protective Earth. PE has the same meaning as the symbol.

The symbol for Protective Earth.

Earth, Ground This document uses the term “earth” which is the same as the U.S. term “ground”.

AC 230V A value that is displayed with the AC or DC before the value represents a nominal

voltage with standard tolerances (usually ±15%) included. For example, DC 12V

describes a 12V battery disregarding whether it is full (13.7V) or flat (10V).

230V AC A value with the unit (V AC) at the end is a momentary value without any additional

tolerances included.

50 Hz versus 60 Hz As long as not otherwise stated, AC 100V and AC 230V parameters are valid at 50 Hz

mains frequency. AC 120V parameters are valid for 60 Hz mains frequency.

nom Indicates a nominal value.

typ Indicates a typical value.

— (alone in table cell) A dash alone in a table cell indicates that there is no information to be included in that

single-phase-input power supply. It

provides a floating, stabilized, and

galvanically separated SELV/PELV/ES1

output voltage. The output fulfills the

requirements for a limited power source

according to NEC Class 2.

The device is equipped with push-in

terminals, which are optimized for

automated wiring.

The mechanically robust housing is made of

a high-grade, reinforced molded material,

which permits surrounding temperatures

up to 70 °C (158 °F).

External input protection

The device is designed, tested, and approved for branch circuits up to 20 A

without additional protection device. If an external fuse is used, do not use

circuit breakers smaller than 6A B- or 4A C-Characteristic. Smaller circuit

breakers may cause a nuisance tripping of the circuit breaker.

Input Inrush Current An NTC limits the input inrush current after turn-on of the input voltage. The

inrush current is input voltage and ambient temperature dependent. The

output load has no impact on the inrush current value.

The charging current into EMI suppression capacitors is disregarded in the

first microseconds after switch-on.

Output The output provides a SELV/PELV/ES1 rated voltage, which is galvanically

isolated from the input voltage.

The output is electronically protected against no-load, overload, and short

circuit. If there is a protection event, audible noise may occur.

The output is designed to supply any kind of loads, including inductive and

capacitive loads. Capacitive loads should not be larger than 2200 μF with 5 A or

8000 μF with 2.5 A additional current load.

At heavy overloads (when output voltage falls below 8V), the device delivers

continuous output current for 20 ms. After the 20 ms have passed, the output

is switched off for 170 ms before a new start attempt is automatically

performed. This cycle is repeated as long as the overload exists.

Back-feeding loads Max 16V The unit is resistant and does not show malfunctioning when a load feeds back voltage to

the power supply. It does not matter whether the power supply is on or off. The absorbing

Hold-up Time The hold-up time is the time during which the output voltage of a power supply

remains within specification following the loss of input power. The hold-up

time is output load dependent. At no load, the hold-up time can be up to

several seconds. The green DC OK lamp is also on during this time.
